I'm curious about your economics - what parts of your income come from the books and royalties, speaking, consulting, etc?

Should a software development manage know how to code well enough to replace one of the team members in a pinch?
See http://stackoverflow.com/questions/525326/should-managers-be-expected-to-program from lively discussion on whether managers should program.
I just want to know how well you think managers should know how to program, with the caveat that if someone does not program for a while, they will lose their skill.
Thanks!

What specific, objective things can you do to find your "passion"? Assuming it's possible to make a career out of pursuing your passion(s), how do you narrow that down to one or a few things?

What is transparency in the business sense? How does it work? Why be transparent? Why not? Contrast transparency and modern marketing with old school mass media marketing or advertising... how have we evolved?

How do you think that a client should be managed if they just do not want to understand the process or how things are being build? How should you react if a client always asks to shorten timings and they do not trust the people that are setting up the schedule just because they are not aware of the production process and are not willing to learn and understand?

It has been mentioned spending more time on design helps ease the realization part.
Examples such as Toyota, where teams would maybe spend 7 out of a total of 10 months in designing a product, and then build in the remaining 3 months.
10 -> 3 -> 1 approach at Apple is also one where you could begin with 10 alternatives, and finally narrow to 1.
How can we convince or be convinced (in an Agile Soft-Dev world) that we must spend a good amount of time on design to get things right ?
How do successful design teams work ? Can you write about examples of innovation or good product design, and the process involved there. -
